Government Degree College Jourian was established in the year 2019 vide Govt. order No: 106-HE of 2019, Dated: 01.03.2020. It was formally inaugurated on 29-07-2019 in make shift arrangement at Govt. Girls High School Jourian by Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Sh Sanjeev Verma in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Sh. Ramesh Kumar and Principal, Govt Degree College Akhnoor/ Nodal Officer Jourian, Prof. Kuldeep Raj Sharma.
The College has acquired 82 Kanals of land in Jourian at the bank of sacred river Chenab which is sufficient for further expansion. Jourian is a Municipal Committee and falls in the area adjoining International Border. Degree College Jourian caters to the needs of the students belonging to the border and most remote area of the state. Students come from Pargwal, Dori-Dager, Pallanwala, Dhok Khalsa, Chack Bhagwana, Muthi-Maira and other surrounding area of the town Jourian.
The college has an experienced and dedicated teaching faculty that leaves no stone unturned to impart quality education to the students belonging to remote areas. The college is offering courses in arts stream only. The College started with 77 students in the first academic session 2019-20. Cultural programmes, Debates, Quiz Competitions, Essay Writing Competitions, Drawing and Painting Competitions etc. are organized from time to time in the college for the holistic development of the students.
Jourian town was established by Sh Mustafa Khan, Jagirdhar of Rakh Dhok in 1903. It is situated at a distance of 1KM away from the north bank of the river Chenab and 48 KM from the Jammu City. This town has a population of approx. 4000 (2001 census). The students from this area used to travel Akhnoor or Jammu for higher studies. However, due to the visionary and consistent efforts of the locals, local and state leadership, a Govt. Degree College was sanctioned for Jourian in 2019 by the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir for providing quality education to the students of remote and border area.
State land measuring 82 Kanals at the bank of river Chenab for the construction of new building of the Govt. Degree College, Jourian is handed over to the Department of Higher Education. The construction of the new building of the college has already been allotted to the JKPCC.
